Why Fulcrum is a Bad Deal for Gary

This report explains the process Fulcrum proposes and why the claims it makes are greatly exaggerated.

 Toxics in Garbage

All municipal waste streams contain plastic and all plastics contain toxic chemicals. When garbage is landfilled or processed these chemicals  will leach, be emitted into the air or form a waste stream that will need to be disposed of.

Waste-to-Fuel: The Reality

Waste-to-fuel processes that use mixed municipal garbage a feedstock are unproven, energy consumptive, and polluting. They have yet to produce fuel on a commerical scale anywhere in the world.

Chemical Recycling: A Dangerous Deception.

This report outlines the science and data showing that processes like the ones Fulcrum plans to use at its Centerpoint plan in Gary (known as "chemical recycling") havefailed for decades and will not contribute significantly to resolving the plastics crisis.

Rather, industry support for chemical recycling is an industry ploy to support the ongoing expansion of plastic production while causing unacceptable levels of environmental and social harm and impacts on human health, through emissions, waste generation, energy consumption, and contaminated outputs.

EPA Environmental Screen

The US Environmental Protection Agency defines environmental justice as "the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. This goal will be achieved when everyone enjoys."
